The prison without walls

Recently, I came across an introspective question:

What do you believe you are here for, and what prevents you from living that way?

Most people would answer the first part with things like to love and be loved, to raise my family, to create something meaningful, to help others, and so on. These answers may sound different, but they orbit the same few ideas: love, connection, safety and contribution to others.

Underneath, many of these answers translate into something even more fundamental: I want to matter. I want to be loved. I don't want to suffer. Even people with power often reveal fear. Even people without it often reveal dignity.

So what prevents them from living that way? The answers are usually familiar: fear of losing what they already have, other people's expectations, debt, shame, trauma, time, limiting beliefs, and so on.

Many of the deepest obstacles aren't external anymore. They're internalized versions of something external that happened long time ago.

The pattern is this:

People know, roughly, how they want to live. They don't believe they're allowed to.

Not by society. Not by fate. By an invisible permission structure they never remember agreeing to.

But the gap between the life we live and the life we believe we're here for isn't immeasurable. Once we can see its shape, we can begin to cross it.
